Driving in Greece with a foreign licence
Peloponnese switchbacks, Crete's gorge roads, island quads that shouldn't be legal and rental Aygos that barely are: Greece is glorious, informal driving with one formal edge — the paperwork the tourist police ask for.
Do you need one for Greece?
Greece formally requires non-EU licences to be paired with an international permit — it's among the EU countries that rental agencies themselves enforce for non-EU cards, and island tourist police run seasonal checks around beach-town strips.
Greek insurers are the other reader: island scrapes are the national rental sport, and claims with unreadable licence data drift. Licence + translation photographed together at pickup is the cheap vaccination for the whole holiday.
At the rental desk
Athens airport is standard; island operations are family businesses where the car meets you at the port with the tank at 'some'. Check quads' legality against your licence class — the ATV question is where island rentals get casual and police don't.
If you're stopped
Tourist police on Rhodes, Kos, Zakynthos and Crete's north coast check licences at strip checkpoints in July–August, non-EU cards especially. It's quick and friendly with papers, ticket-y without. Mountain national roads get radar vans at predictable straightaways.

Quads and ATVs — what licence do they need?
In Greece, a car (B) licence covers most rental quads — but helmets are mandatory and enforced, and some islands' municipal rules differ for engine sizes. The fatal-accident statistics on quads are why police look. Take the Aygo.
Crete in three days — drivable?
One coast, yes. Chania→Elafonisi→Loutro area is a full glorious day each way; adding the east (Lasithi) needs the week. Gorge-road pullouts beat every organised viewpoint.
Ferry + car or fly + rent per island?
Rent per island. Ferrying rentals between islands is usually contract-forbidden and always time-expensive. Island fleets are cheap; book the port pickup and start driving where the boat lands.
Athens — any reason to drive?
Cape Sounion at sunset, the only one. The city itself: metro. Athens traffic combines Rome's geometry with more motorcycles and stronger opinions.
