Do you need one for Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka formally requires foreign drivers to have their licence recognised locally — historically via a Department of Motor Traffic endorsement or a recognition permit arranged with the rental. An international-format translation is the document that endorsement process reads.
Most reputable rental agencies arrange the local recognition permit for you (a day, small fee) using your licence + international documentation. Arriving with the 12-language translation already in hand is what makes that process smooth instead of a Colombo office queue.
At the rental desk
Colombo and Negombo agencies handle the recognition paperwork routinely for cars; scooter shops in Weligama and Arugam Bay are looser but the police are not. Tuk-tuk self-drive hires (a genuine Sri Lanka thing) come with their own permit arrangement through the rental platforms.
If you're stopped
Southern-coast police check scooters and tuk-tuks driven by foreigners regularly. Licence + translation + the local recognition slip is the full set; missing the local slip is the most common fine. Checks are polite and quick when papers are in order.

Do I still need the local endorsement with your translation?
For strict legality, yes — Sri Lanka's system wants the local recognition step, and our translation is the input to it, not a replacement for it. Good rentals arrange it; we say this here because most sites don't.
Can I really rent a tuk-tuk?
Yes — platforms like the established tuk-tuk rental agencies bundle the recognition permit into the booking. It's the one vehicle where the paperwork usually arrives sorted.
Is the hill country hard driving?
Narrow, foggy, bus-dominated switchbacks — beautiful and slow. Plan 30 km/h averages uphill, use the horn on blind bends like the locals, and never overtake a bus into fog.
Scooter classes — same story as elsewhere?
Same: your home licence needs the motorcycle class. The recognition permit copies what your licence allows; it can't add categories.
