Driving in Türkiye with a foreign licence
The Turquoise Coast's D400 is one of the world's great drives — Kaş to Antalya alone justifies the rental. Turkey's jandarma checkpoints and its rental desks both run on documents, and both are satisfied cheaply.
Do you need one for Türkiye?
Turkey expects foreign drivers to carry an international permit or a notarised translation when the licence isn't readable to officials; licences in Latin script get tolerance at desks, but jandarma checkpoints inland and after-incident processing want documentation they can read line-by-line.
Fines (radar, seat-belt) and the e-Devlet systems record licence details as typed by an officer. The 12-language booklet keeps that record matching your card — and turns the checkpoint's questions into a page-flip.
At the rental desk
Antalya, Dalaman and Istanbul airports run high-volume desks (local brands beat internationals on price; check excess terms). Deposit blocks and HGS toll transponders are standard. Cars are manual by default — automatics need booking.
If you're stopped
Jandarma checkpoints on the D400 and inland routes stop cars routinely in summer. Licence + translation + rental papers, thirty seconds, iyi yolculuklar. Alcohol limits are enforced with checkpoints at night around resort towns: 0.05% with a rental in the car park is the sensible reading.

Istanbul — rent there or after?
After. The city combines Roman-era street plans with contemporary traffic emotion, and parking that costs more than the car. Take the ferry, collect the car at the airport heading out.
Are the D400's radar rumours true?
Yes — mobile radar between Kaş and Kalkan, fixed units near Side. Fines mail to the rental and hit your card with fees. The road is too beautiful to speed through anyway.
Cappadocia self-drive — worth it?
Ideal: distances are short, valleys are scattered, and dawn balloon-chasing needs your own wheels. Gravel valley tracks are contract grey-zones — park at the trailheads.
Do I need the HGS toll tag on the coast?
Only for the motorways and the big bridges. The D400 itself is toll-free; crossing the Dardanelles bridge or using O-routes bills the HGS on the windscreen.
