Do you need one for United Arab Emirates?
The UAE requires tourists to carry an international permit or recognised licence documentation with their home licence — around 50 licence nationalities (GCC, most of EU, US, UK...) also enjoy direct recognition for driving, while others strictly need the international document for both renting and insurance validity.
Even direct-recognition nationals hit the readability wall: police accident reports (mandatory for every scratch in the UAE) and Salik/fine processing go smoother when your licence classes are legible to the officer typing the report. The 12-language layout is precisely that.
At the rental desk
Dubai desks are efficient document scanners: passport, entry stamp, licence, international documentation if your nationality needs it. Deposits are card-blocked (AED 1,500–3,000). Note the accident rule: no police report, no insurance — every incident, however small, gets a report number.
If you're stopped
Professional and camera-backed. If stopped or in any accident, you present licence + documentation and wait for the report. Fines are systemised (radars everywhere — 20 km/h over is expensive). The document conversation is the easy part when your file is readable.

My licence is on the direct-recognition list. Why carry anything else?
For the moments the system meets your paper: accident reports, insurance claims, police processing. Direct recognition covers the legal right to drive; readable documentation covers the administration around it. Belt and suspenders, priced like a dinner.
Can I take the rental to Oman?
Only with written permission and Oman-valid insurance from the rental (many include it for a fee). Border posts check the car's paper as carefully as yours.
Desert driving — anything special?
Rental contracts exclude off-road damage almost universally. Dune bashing happens in tour vehicles, not your rental Corolla — an exclusion clause reads your odometer better than you'd think.
Speed limits show two numbers — which counts?
The posted limit plus a tolerance buffer applies on some Abu Dhabi roads, while Dubai enforces the posted number exactly. Assume the posted number everywhere and the radar bill stays at zero.
