Egypt requires foreign drivers to carry an international permit or Arabic-readable documentation with the licence — police checkpoints between every governorate genuinely read them, and rental insurers write the requirement into contracts.

If you're stopped
Checkpoints are constant, formal and fine with papers; convoy rules for some desert routes change — ask locally. Cairo's traffic police manage flow by hand gestures that outrank signals. Night driving outside cities is genuinely dangerous (unlit everything) — plan around it.

It's an expert level: lane markings are historical documents, horns are sonar. Most self-drivers collect cars when leaving Cairo. Uber works excellently in the capital — save your driving for the coast.

Smooth dual carriageway, radar-checked, checkpoint-punctuated, empty between resorts. Hurghada→Marsa Alam is 3.5 easy hours; fuel up at majors, and watch for camels with the same seriousness as the signs suggest.
